Douglas was born Gerald Rubenstein on November 12, 1932, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Russian Jewish immigrants Rose and William Rubenstein, a junk dealer who subsequently went on to make mattresses. Producer of records Alan Douglas was his brother. He attended Brandeis University and law school in Boston before quitting, starting an acting career, and relocating to California. There he met Arlene Martel, his first wife, who was the mother of Adam Palmer, a little boy. Avra and Jod were their own two children after that.
