On February 27, 1983, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Devin Lamar Harris was welcomed into the world. He is one of three children of his parents. Terry and Julie Harris. Her siblings are brother Bruce and sister Tanisha.

From an early age, Harris was recognized for his exceptional athletic ability. When he attended high school in Wauwatosa East, he participated in basketball and volleyball, although the latter was only for one season in which he earned full conference honors. After choosing to focus on basketball, Harris initially battled a few injuries that limited his appearance, but he was able to convince his scouts and coaches to put in some wonderful performances that helped him to set his team’s high school scoring record through an undefeated regular season.

At the end of his high school year, Devin Harris was named Wisconsin Mr. Basketball, who accepted an offer to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In his first year playing for the Badgers, Harris and his team surprised everyone by unexpectedly winning the Big Ten Championship. The team then repeated the feat in his second year, particularly honoring him as the tournament’s most outstanding player. By the end of his college years, Devin Harris had established himself as one of the best players in the country. That year, he received the Basketball Silver Award as the Big Ten Player of the Year and was also named second team All-American. Harris then announced that he was forgoing his third year of college to enter the 2004 NBA draft.

Devin Harris was 5th overall picked by the Washington Wizards and later traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 5.7 points and 2.2 assists in 76 appearances. The following season, Harris experienced a remarkable improvement in his game, which earned him comparisons to Dwayne Wade, even though he spent some time on the sidelines due to injury. He averaged 9.9 points and 3.2 assists in 56 regular season games before the injury, but he returned to the playoffs and helped his team to the Finals where they lost to the Miami Heat.

Harris’ time with the Mavericks came to an abrupt end in February 2008 when he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. In just two seasons with his new team, he scored career points and rebounds per game, becoming a fan favorite, making his first and only all-star appearance in 2009. Harris played four total seasons with the Nets, followed by a two-year stint with the Utah Jazz and a year with the Atlanta Hawks before returning to Dallas for a second stint with the Mavs.

After five years with the Mavericks, Devin Harris joined the Denver Nuggets in January 2018. He only spent half the season with them before rejoining the Mavericks for a third stint in August 2018.

Brother

Devin Harris lost his brother Bruce on October 19, 2017 in North Dallas, Texas. Bruce died in a horrific car accident after the car he was traveling in, which broke down on the Central Expressway near Walnut Hill, was in the back at around 1.45am. The vehicle in which two occupants were also stopped on fire after the collision.

Since his passing, Bruce Harris has been described as a humorous, cheerful guy by people who knew him, including his brother’s teammates, and leaves behind a son named Brayden.
